Accuracy of Death - SDAFF 2008 capsule reviews
San Diego Asian Film Festival 2008: capsule reviewsBy APA Staff

APA made a quick trip to San Diego, and we were pleased to find pictures of Takeshi Kaneshiro all around, advertising this year's San Diego Asian Film Festival. But we didn't spend all our time staring; here are capsule reviews of some of the films that played this year.
Accuracy of Death
dir: Masaya Kakei
Many people find Takeshi Kaneshiro wonderful for a number of reasons: he's undeniably gorgeous; he can converse in Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin, and English; and he has a chameleon-like approach to acting, able to adapt to any role. However, what draws me most to the Okinawan-Taiwanese actor is
his ability to embody gentle, dopey, irresistibly adorable characters, with seemingly little effort.
It's been 14 years since Kaneshiro won numerous hearts playing the broken-hearted cop He
Qiwu who ate pineapples for a month after a failed relationship in Chungking Express. With his first
Japanese-produced film in years, he's now returned to playing another lonely character, a shinigami
(death god) who takes on the job of judging the forthcoming and unnatural deaths of three characters in different decades: a young office lady (Minami Konishi), a yakuza boss (Ken Mitsuishi) and finally, a hair stylist (Sumiko Fuji). While Kaneshiro's character finds his job to be desolate, he begins to see
some changes take place during his encounters with the three characters. While the story was
absolutely predictable and underdeveloped, it isn't hard to be swayed by charismatic characters.
At age 35, Kaneshiro easily manages to save a film with a weak plot and forgettable supporting
characters.
By golly, he's still got it. --Kanara Ty
